The white flag: history, curiosities... and the first snow

When the cold weather arrives, we take out our scarves, gloves, and skis... and metaphorically, those who raise the white flag. As snow begins to cover the landscapes, that immaculate flag often returns as a perfect metaphor: pure, simple, and unequivocal.
But why is it specifically white? How did this "strange" flag come about? And most importantly... what does it have to do with winter?

The white flag: a symbol born to be seen

The white flag is the international sign of surrender, truce, or request for negotiation. It is probably the most "democratic" symbol in history: recognized everywhere, regardless of language, culture, or era.

It seems that the first documented use dates back to the Eastern Han dynasty, which ruled China between 25 and 220 AD. The ancient Romans also used light-colored fabrics or whitened shields to call for a "ceasefire". The logic was simple: white is visible. Even amidst chaos, dust... and why not, snow.

Imagine a soldier on an ancient battlefield desperately trying to make himself understood. A neutral color not associated with any faction was the most immediate solution. Many historians argue that white was also used because it was very easy to obtain. No expensive dyes or complex processes were needed: just a raw, faded fabric, or even a piece of linen washed too many times.

White is also a color that has always been associated with concepts like peace, purity, and neutrality (we find it with the same meaning in many national flags around the world).

A bit of history...

The use of the white flag was formalized in Article 32 of the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, which, together with the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and subsequent Additional Protocols, form the basis of international humanitarian law.

White as snow...

It's funny to think that the white flag, a symbol of "peace and surrender," in a way perfectly represents the spirit of winter: a natural pause, a moment when everything stops, softens, slows down, and where we can reflect and plan for the next season!

Raising the white flag in the face of the cold is a thought we've all had at least once! 😅

But be careful, the meaning can change depending on the context!

It's important to know that the white flag can take on different meanings depending on the context:

• during Formula 1 races and car races in general, the display of the white flag indicates that there is a slow vehicle on the track, a car retiring, or a service or rescue vehicle
  
• on Italian beaches, the white flag is displayed in beach resorts to indicate calm and tranquil waters
